Description This curriculum web is written by a 9 th grade English teacher, who felt that his students lack strong writing abilities because they do not know basic grammar rules. The teacher’s feelings are echoed throughout his school district, as well as in reports all over the country that show that students are not able to produce grammatically-correct and well-written compositions. This curriculum web emerges as a way to help promote a better understanding of grammar and to help motivate students to write effective complex sentences. Aim The aim of this curriculum web is to strengthen students’ writing abilities by learning how to fix common grammatical mistakes through the appropriate implementation of grammar rules. This curriculum web is important because it will allow students to become better writers. Rationale Grammar rules are the tracks that keep the train of ideas running smoothly in sentences. Without an understanding of grammar, writing will be chaotic and incoherent. Presently, students’ quality of writing is deteriorating. Because of the grammar mistakes, it is difficult for students to transmit their ideas coherently through their writing. In order to prevent the deterioration of writing from becoming an uncontrollable epidemic, it is imperative for students to learn how to detect their own grammar mistakes and be able to correct them. It is through this curriculum web that students will be equipped with the necessary grammar skills to enable them to write better and to become watchdogs of their own mistakes. Learning Objectives

Standards Grammar and Mechanics of Writing Instructional Plan The purpose of this curriculum web is to support a 9 th grade English class with learners that have grammar problems in their writing. The separate lessons and activities are on-going throughout the year. As the teacher detects a grammar difficulty that most students encounter, he or she will create a mini-lesson plan and post it on the curriculum web for all students. The main goal of the curriculum web is for students to utilize it at their own pace, while having references to prior activities that will help them strengthen their grammar usage. The lessons and activities currently present in the curriculum web are intended to help students with the most frequent problems that all students are having. Once all students master these grammar rules, students should have minimum grammar mistakes in their writing. For each of the lesson in this curriculum, it is suggested that the teacher demonstrate the problems and the proper usage by using real student work. For example, a teacher can write down an incorrect sentence in the chalk board and with the help of the students correct it. For advance students, the curriculum web has resources for students to work on advance grammar rules and issues.
